Ed grew up in California but moved to Charleston, South Carolina as a young teenager. He worked with his father during summers and post school years in the building trades and became a quality craftsman before moving to Telluride in 1981. He was an accomplished surfer, competing for 11 years on the East and Gulf Coasts. He operated surf shops and fiberglass repair shops before moving to Telluride. His hobbies include surfing, fishing, hunting, kyaking and softball. His tournament team won the Senior Softball World Championships in 2005.
